SOMSD Board of Education Information

Board of Education elections are non-partisan and are governed by New Jersey statute. The South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education consists of nine members serving three-year terms.

Each year, three of the nine seats are up for election. The election is won by the three highest vote getters.

In recent years, the election statute has allowed (but not required) groups of two to three candidates to form "slates", identified by the candidates' names on the ballot associated with a three-word slogan.

Ballot positions are determined by random draw, conducted by the County Clerk eleven days after the filing deadline on the last Tuesday in July. The "slate" provision now stipulates that the candidates on a slate should be listed together.
